Body of one drowning victim recovered in Temiskaming Shores, Ont.

OPP recover child's remains in Temiskaming Shores Provincial police found the remains of one of two victims of Sunday's drowning in Temiskaming Shores.

Ontario Provincial Police's underwater search and recovery unit has found the remains of one of two drowining victims Dec. 29 in Temiskaming Shores.

Christian Bergeron and his daughter Maya went through the ice at Pete's Dam Park in the afternoon of Dec. 29.

After days of searching, Maya's remains were found around 1 p.m. Jan. 1, police said in a news release Thursday.

"One person has been found deceased and the search for a second person continues after they were observed going through the ice," police said.

The search for the father's remains continues today by the Temiskaming OPP, OPP North East emergency response team and the OPP underwater search and recovery unit, with the assistance of the Temiskaming Shores Fire Department and the Temiskaming Emergency Medical Services.

"The search is continuing for the second person," police said.

"The OPP are asking the public to avoid the area as they continue their investigation in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and Ontario Forensic Pathology Service."

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family of the victims. A post on the page said Christian died while trying to save Maya, who had gone through the ice.

"In an act of incredible love and courage, Christian attempted to rescue Maya from a dangerous situation at Pete’s Dam, a place that was close to their hearts," the post said.

"Tragically, both father and daughter were swept away by the current, leaving an indescribable loss for their family and everyone who knew them."

More than $29,000 has been raised as of 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
