It may look like a perfect winter day but don't be mistaken.

The temperature on Sunday morning in Windsor-Essex as -22.4 C, beating the previous record of -18.9 C set in 1943.

Temperatures are so cold, they could cause problems on your morning commute.

"When it comes to your car, this weather tests your battery. For folks who have a battery that's getting up there in years this type of cold can drain those batteries and make it difficult to start first thing in the morning," says Geoff Coulsen, meteorologist with Environment Canada.

Police suggest motorists have some type of emergency kit in the trunk of the car with some basic necessities in case something goes wrong.

If your heading outside, health professional recommend hats, mitts, and layering your clothing.

They say if you aren't dressed properly, there could be serious consequences.

"Skin can freeze relatively quickly as the temperature goes down especially with the high winds we've been getting. Within a few minutes you can feel the effects of frostbite on exposed skin," says Jacob Rushton, nurse practitioner.

Officials say cold temperatures will continue for the rest of February.

Another record low is expected to be broken on Monday.

Temperatures are expected to drop to -22 degrees, that will beat the 1979 record of -18 degrees Celsius.
