The Town of Amherstburg is getting a new hotel.

The Quality Inn and Suites will feature 60 rooms with a conference room and a meeting centre with space for up to 120 people. It will also have an indoor swimming pool.

Nor-Built Construction is collaborating with Choice Hotels for the project.

“I have been working on bringing a quality, family-friendly, all-purpose hotel to the Town of Amherstburg for years,” said Nor-Built president Norbert Bolger. “In close and effective partnership with Mayor DiCarlo and Town Administration, I feel the time has come to move forward with this project in providing accommodations to our visitors, families, and the conference and tournament market.”

Mayor Aldo DiCarlo announced the groundbreaking at the corner of Simcoe St. and Meloche Rd. near the Libro Centre on Thursday morning.

“A lot of relief and a lot of pride for the Town of Amherstburg,” said DiCarlo.

The hotel, which will span six acres of land, is intended to attract families, conferences, sport tourism and independent travel.

Nor-Built announced the hotel will offer hot breakfasts and expects to employ 20 people; the property will also have room for further development of a number of restaurants and retail space, which will also bring further employment and investment to the town.

Bolger tells CTV News the hotel alone will cost $10-million, and nearby restaurant developments could bring the project value to $20-million.

Nor-Built plans to invest $15-to-$20 million on this hotel project.

“I’m pretty confident in this town that this is definitely something we need,” added Bolger.

"This gives the visitors an opportunity to stay overnight and to enjoy the assets of Amherstburg and the region longer than a day trip,” said Gordon Orr, the CEO of Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island.

Council still must approve the project.

It is expected to be open by 2020.
