Federal NDP Leader Tom Mulcair is talking about his vision for the agricultural sector during stops in Windsor and Chatham today.

Mulcair is presenting his farm-to-fork approach to agriculture.

He says the plan will support opportunities for farmers and help ensure healthy and affordable food for middle-class families.

“The NDP have a vision for a thriving agricultural sector that will provide healthy, affordable food for generations to come,” says Mulcair.

Mulcair’s proposals include creating a payment protection program for produce farmers, maintaining Canada’s supply management system, and supporting farm families so they can continue to make a living.

He says they will also work with the provinces and territories to provide farmers with access to economic opportunities at home and abroad.

He visited Geertsema Farm in Chatham Wednesday afternoon and then plans on attending a rally is at the Fogolar Furlan Club at 7 p.m.

Essex MP Jeff Watson responded to Mulcair’s agriculture plan in a news release.

“Working directly with Canadian producers and processors, our Government has taken Canadian agriculture to unprecedented heights,” says Watson.

“Farm cash receipts and net operating incomes are currently at their highest levels in Canadian history, while agricultural exports reached a record $56.6 billion in 2014.”
