A Windsor woman is devastated after she says her dog was killed by another dog.

Fran Stewart says her nine-year-old Chow-Chow Spike died outside a downtown grocery store this past Saturday after a confrontation with a Staffordshire Terrier.

“I'm so upset,” says Stewart. “I'm traumatized by what happened. He killed my dog in front of me and I'm still in shock over it."

The Windsor / Essex County Humane Society says the owner of a Staffordshire Terrier left his dog tied up outside the store. The owner is now facing charges under the municipal bylaw.

Stewart says she and Spike were walking by when the two dogs started fighting.

Stewart hopes her story will prevent another incident like this.

“His death is going to mean something,” she says. “If it's to change the rules, that's what it will be."

According to the humane society, Staffordshire Terriers are a restricted breed in Windsor, with the exception of dogs that were owned before the bylaw came into effect.

A post-mortem examination is being done on the dog to determine the exact cause of death.

Windsor police are currently investigating.
