A water drive that started on Thursday in Windsor has resulted in an outpouring of support for the people of Flint, Mich.

The Windsor Spitfires first introduced the water drive and the amount collected has surpassed all expectations.

The water crisis started after officials changed the source of drinking water from treated Lake Huron to the Flint River. That has led to lead contamination, creating a serious public health danger.

More than 60,000 cases of water have been donated and loaded onto two transport trucks for Flint residents.

“Seeing the condition over there I thought that's the right thing to do,” one donor says.

As resident after resident turned up to donate, a lineup of cars resulted at the WFCU Centre – all ready to drop off one of nature’s great gifts.

Flint residents have been without clean water for more than a year.

The Spitfires were thankful for the support.

"From something that came from a simple phone call to us putting all this together. Just the support not only from our fans in Windsor, but Essex County as well," says Nathan Sellon, the fan development coordinator.

The Flint Firebirds were to receive the water and make sure the bottles got into the hands of people who need them most.
