One person was seriously injured in a fire Friday night on Queen Street in Chatham.

Chatham-Kent emergency responders were called to the scene around 9 p.m. after receiving numerous calls of an explosion and fire.

Fire officials say the teams arrived on scene within four minutes and found apartment and commercial premises with flames coming through the roof. They say a number of people needed to be rescued.

"Despite the ferocious nature of the fire, crews were able to stop the fire spreading to adjoining units and homes and with the assistance of hydro and gas engineers, bring the fire under control," a release says.

The blaze was extinguished around 1:30 a.m.

Police remain on the scene Saturday and Queen Street has been closed to traffic, south of Richmond Street.

The Ontario Fire Marshall is investigating the cause of the fire, but officials say it could take a number of days to complete due to the complex nature of the incident.
