New details are emerging about a fight in Detroit involving Windsor firefighters.

Sources tell CTV News suspensions will be coming down this week and they say one of those involved may be fired.

But one witness insists the incident was minor, and that it’s now being blown out of proportion. They say it wasn’t a brawl, but a short fight between two men.

Still Windsor Chief Administrative Officer Helga Reidel says the events are concerning, “We don’t take these things lightly.”

The story first broke last Friday, but the altercation actually occurred on May 25th. The investigation into events of that day is now complete with Reidel, at this point, only saying, “It was a physical altercation between two firefighters.”

Each year Detroit firefighters host a memorial service for their members who have lost their lives on the job. And each year Windsor firefighters take part in the ceremony.

Sources say this year some of the Windsor members stayed in Detroit, visiting local bars.

CTV News has learned a group of 14 Windsor firefighters hired a local bus company to be their designated driver. Sources also say the firefighters were out of uniform and not on call or expected to report for work.

The group was on its way back to Windsor around five in the afternoon when, according to the source, two men got off the bus after agreeing to fight.

The witness says it was, "two guys…one punch…and it was over."

He adds it was certainly not a brawl, as other sources have indicated. But there are reports the firefighter who was punched was seriously hurt and off work for some time after the incident.

What isn't clear is how the events came to the attention of brass inside Windsor Fire and Rescue Services.

The city's C.A.O. says even though the incident took place on personal time, and there was nothing outwardly identifying the men as Windsor firefighters, there could still be some punishment, as per the collective agreement.

Reidel says, “The city policy requires all of our employees to recognize their duties as civil servants in all of their conduct.”

She adds the city's legal department has been involved in the investigation and now the situation lies with Fire Chief Bruce Montone to determine punishment, if warranted.

Calls to the chief, as well as to the president of the firefighters union, were not returned.
