It was two years ago Saturday that Cpl. Nathan Cirillo was shot and killed at the Canadian National War Memorial in Ottawa by a lone gunman, who was later gunned down.

Cirillo, a Canadian soldier on ceremonial sentry duty, is being remembered on the anniversary of his death.

A local man planned to stand guard for 12 hours Saturday at the downtown Windsor cenotaph in honour of Cirillo and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent, who was murdered 48 hours before Cirillo in a hit-and-run by an Islamic-extremist in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que.

Windsor veteran Kevin Robson told CTV News he feels an honour guard should be on duty every year on October 22 across the country, not only to recognize Cirillo but to also show respect for Vincent.

Robson says a heart attack last month kept him from going to Kingston, where he had originally planned to pay his respects.

Others joined him Saturday at the cenotaph and Robson, who began duties in the dark at 6 a.m., says he’s overwhelmed by the support he’s been receiving from the community. He plans to continue this remembrance.

"I will do it as long as I’m able to do it."
