The Fifth Street bridge in downtown Chatham is about to be closed for six months.

Starting on Tuesday July 4, the bridge will be closed for a complete overhaul.

The project calls for the bridge to be completely removed and replaced, while nearby road improvements will also be done.

Initially, it was set to be closed ahead of Canada Day, but the closure on July 4 will allow better access to Chatham's downtown and it meets the contractor’s schedule.

The bridge will be re-opened to the public in December.

The balance of the remaining work is expected to be complete by June 29, 2018.
