The Essex Region Conservation Authority is looking to implement a smoking ban.

According to ERCA, they will work with the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit to draft a policy that prohibits smoking in “high use” areas. These areas include Holiday Beach, Hillman Marsh and John R. Park Homestead. The ban would exclude parking lots and seasonal campsites.

“By using a phased approach, administration will be able to advise the board of public reaction, compliance issues or concerns, and any budgetary impact,” says Kevin Money, director of conservation services.

The health unit says outdoor exposure levels of tobacco smoke can be as high as those of indoor second-hand smoke.

ERCA is looking to implement the ban by the start of the 2014 operating season.
