A 20-year-old Chatham man has been charged after police say he got into a fight with his ex-girlfriend assaulted her and cut up her coat.

Chatham-Kent police say the man and his ex-girlfriend began arguing over money on Saturday.

Police say the incident escalated into a physical altercation as the man assaulted and threatened her. Later in the evening, the man allegedly cut her coat into several pieces with scissors.

Officers say through investigation they learned there were previous incidents of domestic violence.

The man was found by police Sunday night and taken into custody.

He has been charged with nine counts of assault, four counts of mischief under $5000, four counts of uttering threats, forcible confinement, choking and assault with a weapon.

He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.
