Two Windsor residents are questioning police protocol following an alleged hit and run Sunday.

Witnesses say the suspect managed to evade police, even though it’s claimed an officer was a short distance away.

Both residents want answers.

Windsor police confirm they were called to the intersection of Ouellette Avenue and Tecumseh Road about 9:40 a.m. Sunday.

Randy Noble says he shouted to an officer that the suspect, who hit a sign, was on the run.

He says the suspect returned minutes later on foot to retrieve his licence plate.

"I heard the crash; it was a pretty good crash,” says resident Bruce King, who lives in the same apartment building as Noble.

"He was yelling, ‘He's right behind you.’ He couldn't have been more than 100 feet from the officer at the time."

Both men say there were shouting from their balconies, but the officer ignored them.

"It's very shocking to see that he didn't even acknowledge, he did not turn around to take one look at this fellow," King says.

They say no back up was called either.

"I did not see him whatsoever go on his radio and call another officer. His hands were nowhere near his shoulders or chest," King says.

Windsor police Const. Andrew Drouillard says public safety was the officer’s primary concern.

"If you have a situation like this where you have something obstructing traffic that may cause a car accident, then you deal with that first then go and track down the suspect."

King and Noble say they are disappointed with Windsor’s police service.

Drouillard says police attempted to speak to Noble that morning.

"The officer called dispatch to call the original complainant, but there was no answer on the phone."

The men wish the incident was handled differently.

"I have not a problem with a police officer. I am very respectful towards them. They have a hard job to do, but man we need to weed out the few that just aren't there."

No arrests have been made and anyone with information is asked to call police.
