A Windsor MP is growing frustrated with the delay of a Canadian bill that would allow single sports betting.

Windsor West MP Brian Masse says the slow pace of Bill C-290 in the senate could open the door for single sports betting in the United States. The bill, which was introduced in 2011, passed through the House of Commons, but has been stalled in the senate.

“It’s important to get this done. The U.S. is already looking at this more seriously, it’s already in a number of states,” Masse says. “If we don’t move on this the United States will.

Adding to his worries is the recent support thrown behind single sports betting by NBA commissioner Adam Silver. In an opinion piece in the New York Time, Silver wrote, “Sports betting should be brought out of the underground and into the sunlight where it can be appropriately monitored and regulated.”

The support of Silver is good for lobbying in the U.S. by not so much in Canada. Masse says Bill C-290 likely won’t be back up for debate until early next year.

Advocates say if passed, the law could bring hundreds of jobs to Windsor.
