A Windsor man is charged with extortion after he allegedly threatened to kill two children if they didn’t shoplift for him.

According to Windsor police, a mother and her two children were shopping at Devonshire Mall, when she ran into a relative on Dec. 7. The man offered to take her children for dinner and she agreed to allow her 12 and 14-year-old to go with him.

Through their investigation, police say the man took the children to several retail stores on Howard Avenue and Walker Road, where the man allegedly threatened to kill the children if they didn’t cooperate with him and steal from the stores.

Officers say approximately $800 worth of merchandise was taken.

Police say they have received and reviewed video footage capturing the suspect and the thefts.

The 23-year-old man is charged with two counts of extortion, three counts of uttering death threats, three counts of theft under $5,000 and three counts of possession under $5,000.
