Long-time Detroit Red Wing Shawn Burr dies after battle with leukemia

Shawn Burr, who spent most of his 16-year NHL career with the Detroit Red Wings, died Monday night.

Dave Goetze, who runs the Shawn Burr Foundation, told the Detroit Free Press that the 47-year-old had died after sustaining massive brain trauma when he fell earlier at his home in St. Clair, Mich.

Diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia in 2010, Burr spent the last three years of his life battling the disease.

The Sarnia, Ont., native was selected seventh overall by Detroit in the first round of the 1984 NHL Draft and played with the Red Wings until 1995. Burr also played for the San Jose Sharks and Tampa Bay Lightning before retiring in 2000.

He finished his career with 181 goals and 440 points in 878 regular-season games.
