The first wave of Windsor passengers are heading to Orlando, Florida today.

Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens and National Airlines president Edward Davidson celebrated with passengers departing on the inaugural flight at 2:30 p.m.

The non-stop service from Windsor International Airport was announced on Oct. 1.

Starting today, flights will depart Thursdays and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. and arrive at Orlando Sanford International Airport at 5 p.m.

National will offer return flights on Thursdays and Sundays, departing at 10:30 a.m. and arriving in Windsor at 1 p.m.

A flight cost about $190 and if all goes well, National Airlines says the company will consider other destinations out of Windsor.

Other warm destinations out of Windsor include Cuba with Sun Wing and upcoming flights with Air Transat to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, which start on Dec. 21.

Air Canada, Porter and West Jet also fly out of Windsor.
