Fines are now being issued to anyone ignoring the closed sign and crossing the Fifth Street bridge in Chatham.

The administrative assistant to the engineering and transportation division says repeated warnings have gone unheeded.

Janet Couvillon says the crossing over the Thames River remains off limits to the public during construction and isn't safe.

Couvillon says crews are disassembling and dismantling parts, and there might be loose or unsecure portions.

She says anyone caught on the bridge could face a $65 fine.
