It was a very emotional night during the Herb Gray Harmony Awards ceremony named after the senior statesman passed away earlier this week.

The Windsor Mayor Eddie Francis paid tribute to the legacy of Gray before 700 people.

Francis noted Gray’s service to the community, representing the same Windsor riding for 13 consecutive terms, ending his career in 2002 as deputy prime minister.

"It's a great opportunity for all of us to pay our respects to Herb, celebrating his life and legacy and what he's given to Windsor and Essex County," he says.

Francis, who has announced he won’t be seeking re-election, was given credit for a number of initiatives including the International Children’s Games and bringing the Olympic Torch to Windsor and Essex.

Francis shared the spotlight with Floyd Cacciavillani, who was presented with the Champion Award for helping new immigrants since he arrived from Italy in 1948.

Over the years, Cacciavillani has acted as an interpreter during appointments with doctors and lawyers, filled out forms and applications, and even travelled to Ottawa to testify at immigration hearings.

The Herb Gray Harmony Award annually recognizes a local individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the community.

Gray's funeral services are scheduled for Friday.
