Harrow District High School and Western Secondary School are recommended for closure at the end of the school year.
Erin Kelly, director of education for the Greater Essex County District School Board, released her recommendations for several Essex County high schools Friday afternoon.
If approved, Harrow High would close at the end of June, 2016. Grades 9 through 12 would start going to Kingsville High, while the Grade 7 and 8's would return to Harrow Public.
Also, the board is recommending the closure of Western Secondary in June. These students would go to their closest high school based on where they live.
A third recommendation calls for taking the programming offered at Western and creating three new "adaptive basic" programs at Belle River High, General Amherst and Kingsville District.
This isn't the first time the situation was dire for Harrow High.
As far back as 2003, the board considered closing the high school in the small town. Each time, either by the sway of public opinion or a change in ministry funding has saved it.
If the trustees agree to close Harrow and Western and move students around, the board is going to ask the Ministry of Education for funding to build a brand new high school in Amherstburg.
At the same time, if approved, they also plan to ask the ministry for funding to build a JK through Grade 12 mega school -- that would consolidate Kingsville, Western and Harrow Highs, plus it would accommodate students from Kingsville public and Jack Minor Public schools.
