Windsor West NDP MP Brian Masse says the former Sandwich Towne post office has been sold to the private sector and he wants the new owners to step forward.

Masse wants them to “inform the community of their plans for the historic building.”

The structure was built over 100 years ago. Canada Post used the building at 3201 Sandwich St. from 1907 until April of 2013.

Masse has been battling for its preservation since Canada Post first brought forward proposals to dispose of the property.

“It has been heart wrenching to watch that beautiful building located in the heart of Sandwich Towne decay and sit idle for over a year now,” says Masse. “This building was an institution in Sandwich Towne for generations, I am hopeful that the owners will come forward with a plan that will restore the structure and reinvigorate the community.”

Masse says records obtained from the Land Registry Office indicate the property has been sold to a company listed as: 2443367 Ontario Ltd. and was sold for $151,000.

“With the sale of the property coming in significantly lower than the original listing, I hope this low purchase price means the new owners are prepared to invest to restore the building,” says Masse.
