The former developer of the old Grace Hospital site in Windsor has been fined for failing to comply with an order involving asbestos waste.

According to Ontario’s Ministry of the Environment, Grace Village Windsor Inc. has been fined $100,000 after pleading guilty on Oct. 17. The company also faces a $25,000 victim surcharge and has been given 180 days to pay the fine.

The ministry says in 2011, Grace Village Windsor hired a consultant who reported that there was no asbestos on the property. The Ministry of Environment later contacted the Ministry of Labour to test the property, which confirmed the presence of asbestos.

The city demolished the property in 2013 and now owns the site.
