A for sale sign is up at an historic public school in Windsor's west end.

J.E. Benson Public School was built in 1915, and closed at the end of the school year in 2014.

Those students now attend Westgate Public School.

Originally named Wyandotte, the school on Wyandotte Street West was renamed in 1936.

The public board is now accepting offers to purchase before a deadline of 2 p.m. on September 20. But the board has not disclosed the asking price or assessment value of the property.

The property is listed on the Windsor Municipal Heritage Register for its historical and architectural designation.

While that in itself doesn't stop any potential demolition, the owner would need to give 60-days notice to allow the city time to decide whether to pursue a heritage designation.
