Pelee Islands is without external power after a fault in a 45 kilometre submarine line.

Mayor Rick Masse confirms there's been a power interruption from the mainland since Monday morning. Pelee Islanders are now getting their electricity from a pair of standby generators.

A spokesperson from Ontario Hydro says crews have discovered a fault in the line, which runs under Lake Erie.

Crews are assembling equipment including a barge and crane to lift the line and splice in a new piece.

Repairs are expected to take a few days.
