Contingency measures are making life a little easier for Boblo Island residents Monday, after thick ice trapped the ferry at the Amherstburg dock over the weekend.

As CTV News first reported Sunday, island residents were somewhat stranded on the island, as the ferries that run to and from Boblo are stuck in the Detroit River. To make matters worse, the icebreakers that would normally be used to deal with this problem were also stuck in the dock.

However, Amico, the company responsible for the islands ferry service, implemented its contingency plan for the first time in a decade.

Four fanboats have been made available to transport the 60 to 70 residents to land. Once in Amherstburg, residents are met with a free shuttle that will taxi them where ever they need to go.

Amico spokesperson, Cindy Prince says several options are being considered at the moment, one of which would see heavy-duty commercial icebreakers brought in to clear a path.

Prince says it’s unclear when the ferry service will be operational again.
