It's shaping up to be one of the worst growing seasons for Essex County farmers.

It’s the opposite problem compared to last year.  Last June was the wettest month on record in Windsor-Essex.

The Santo family farm grows bean, corn and wheat, but this year's crop is struggling to sprout in the desert-like conditions. In fact, it's going backwards, and fast.

Chad Santo says last year they couldn't miss a rain and this year, they can't catch a rain.

“We are willing to pay for a rain right now, we're really suffering,” says Santo.

He says they're at the point right now where if they don't catch a rain soon, they're going to see some devastating effects on the crop.

There’s only been a half-inch of rain at the Santo farm in June.

Geoff Coulson from Environment Canada says the contrast between this year and last is noteworthy and it's shaping up to be the driest June in more than a decade.

"Some of the forecast models I've been looking at have shown not only a dry end to the month of June, but also the first week of July likely to remain notably drier than normal," says Coulson.
