WINDSOR, ONT. -- The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit is reporting only one new COVID-19 case on Wednesday.

This is the lowest number since March.

The region has had a total of 2,351 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 1955 people who have recovered. Seven people are in the hospital and 298 people are self-isolating.

WECHU says the one new case is in the agri-farm sector.

Windsor-Essex medical officer of health Dr. Wajid Ahmed says he hopes the number will stay reasonable.

“We are seeing a shift in the number of cases recently, which is definitely an encouraging sign,” says Ahmed, who adds he wants the public to continue with the same safety measures.Epidemic curve in Windsor-Essex

“I would just like to still urge caution to continue to follow the same measures to keep these numbers at that level,” says Ahmed.

The region recorded two weeks of double-digit increases in new virus cases from July 13 – Aug. 1. Over the past four days, the rate has started to slow down.

“I’d like to see that trend continue and I’d like to thank everyone for following all those measures that we have been asking them to follow,” says Ahmed.

There are 14 Windsor-Essex workplaces still in outbreak status – six agricultural facilities in Kingsville and Leamington, seven manufacturing facilities in Windsor, Leamington, Tecumseh and Kingsville and one construction company in Leamington.

There is currently one long-term care in outbreak status – Augustine Villas in Kingsville.

There have been 71 people who have died in the region related to the virus. Forty-nine deaths have occurred among residents in long-term care homes and two are related to migrant workers.
