Windsor police say they have cracked a 25-year-old sexual assault case thanks to a DNA hit.

In September 1990, officers were dispatched to a residence in the 1700 block of Marentette Avenue in relation to a break and enter, sexual assault investigation.

At the time of the investigation, forensic evidence was seized and submitted to the Centre of Forensic Sciences. Police say forensic analysis at the time provided little assistance.

In July 2015, Windsor detectives and forensic identification officers re-examined the case.

Additional evidence from the case was submitted in December for analysis in light of present day technology available.

On Jan. 27, the Centre of Forensic Sciences contacted Windsor police to indicate that they had made a DNA hit from the National Offender Databank in relation to the evidence submitted in the case.

A Canada Wide Warrant was issued for the arrest of the suspect in this matter.

On Feb. 2, members of the RCMP arrested the suspect in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Windsor detectives went to Burnaby and on Feb. 4, continued the arrest of the suspect.  He was escorted back to Windsor.

John Thomas Wuschenny, 54, a former Windsor resident, is charged with sexual assault with a weapon, break and enter, unlawful confinement, intent to commit an indictable offence, having his face disguised and uttering threats.

Police are continuing with their investigation and are looking into other incidents that occurred in 1990, between June and September.
