Tokens are being phased out at the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel.

Tunnel officials decided the last day tokens would be sold is Dec. 31, 2012.

“Our mandate has been to move forward into more technologically superior methods of toll collection,” said Neal Belitsky, president and CEO of the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, in a release. “Our NEXPRESS Toll program is more efficient and less expensive than paying cash, credit card or token.”

Tokens will still be accepted until the end of 2013.

NEXPRESS Toll is a proximity card or smart card, which can be read without having to be inserted or swiped in a device. The card is held near an electronic reader that beeps when approved.

Belitsky says you don’t have to be a daily commuter. The cards are pre-loaded with $100 and the funds don’t expire.
