Some Essex Town councillors questioned if the roadway where a teen was fatally struck by car while walking his dirt bike Friday evening could be made safer, sooner.
The discussion on Monday night centred on the unfortunate death of 16-year-old Andrew Gyorgy.
Essex County Road 50 is a stretch of road that is slated for a makeover over the next few decades.
Councillor John Scott believes narrow shoulders along the side of the road may have been one of the contributing factors of the accident and he wants to know if it could have been prevented.
“People want safe roads, they want roads they can cycle down, they want roads they can walk down, push strollers down with their family," he says.
Scott asked town administration to take an aggressive stance in the next stage of development of County Road 50. The deadline for next year’s applications for road improvements under the county-wide transportation system is June 30. Scott hopes council will make a commitment by the end of the month.
Meanwhile, condolences continue to pour in for Gyorgy, as family and friends deal with the shocking loss.
Members of the community will have the chance to pay their respects at the Gerald A. Smith Funeral Home in Harrow, Ont. Three viewings are scheduled, the first is Monday night between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Additional viewings will take place Tuesday between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., and again at 7 p.m.
The funeral is slated for Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Church.
OPP say the investigation examining what caused the crash continues. No charges have been laid.
