A convicted drug trafficker has been sentenced to 30 months in jail.
Miles Meraw was convicted of drug trafficking on March 10, 2017. To date, he has served 10 months in jail.
He will serve the remaining 20 months at the St. Lawrence Correctional and Treatment Centre in Brockville.
Meraw's defence lawyer Ken Marley had wanted an acquittal after Windsor police had admitted to accidentally destroying $25,000 of cocaine evidence.
"I'm disappointed that the sentence is as serious and lengthy as it is," says Marley.
The Crown asking for a 48-month prison sentence and 10-year weapons ban. The defence was requesting lengthy probation.
The case dates back to 2013 when Meraw, now 31, was found with a large amount of cocaine.
Chief Al Frederick admitted $25,000 of cocaine was lost from the evidence vault.
"There’s 168 cases going into a big huge bin and they pulled something off the shelf and destroyed it without it being ear marked for destruction, that’s the whole key we're talking about,” Frederick told CTV News in June.
As part of his sentence, Meraw must provide a DNA sample and is prohibited from owning firearms for 10 years.
He is eligible for parole in six months.
Marley tells CTV News he has recommended Meraw appeal both the verdict and sentence.
Meraw now has 30 days to decide if that's what he wants.
