The City of Windsor has issued several orders following a roof collapse at a derelict building in the city’s west end.

City building inspectors were on the scene Wednesday to assess an abandoned building at the corner of University Avenue and Josephine Avenue.

Inspectors are trying to determine if the former commercial space is safe and whether or not it should be torn down.

Windsor fire responded to the building Tuesday night when part of the roof collapsed. District Chief Bruno Bertucci says someone from a high-rise apartment notified fire services. He says the roof had first partially collapsed weeks ago, but nobody called it in.

Fire officials believe the collapse was due to heavy rains and a buildup of water.

Inspectors have now issued orders to the property owner to secure the back wall, which is now bowing and to erect a fence around the building.

The city has given the property owners until July 14 to comply with the orders. If they haven't done so by then, the city will do the work and charge the owner on their taxes
