Many west Windsor residents wondered if this day would ever come, but noticeable demolition has begun at the former Grace Hospital site.

One of the first things to go was the chimney, which was torn down Monday morning.

“I just really wanted to see this happen here. It's been a blight.” says Kevin Oliver, who has lived in the neighbourhood for 27 years.

The city’s contractor, Budget Disposal Inc., began removing designated substances from the inside in February, starting with the Brett Building at Oak and University.

Demolition supervisor Will Bartels says the Brett Building will be the next to go.

“The Brett Building in next two weeks will be completely taken down and we'll have to clean it up and start hauling it away,” says Bartels. “Once the ball is rolling, it kind of continues on.”

Bartels says the cleanup is still on schedule. Full demolition is expected be finished in July.

“It's been a long time coming and I hope it moves rapidly and they get it levelled off and looking somewhat decent for neighbourhood,” says Oliver.

It’s still unknown what will become of the location. Windsor’s Greek community rejected a proposal last month to buy the site to build a new church and community centre.
