A 16-year-old Chatham teen allegedly shot his ex-girlfriend in the mouth after an argument about their baby, say Chatham-Kent police.

Police say the male youth saw his girlfriend walking outside with friends around 8:50 p.m. in Chatham. He approached the girl and an argument ensued.

Officers say the argument escalated into a physical altercation when the male punched her in the back. He then allegedly pulled a BB gun out of his clothing and shot his ex-girlfriend in the mouth.

As the male started running away, police say he continued to shoot the BB gun towards her, striking her two more times in the face.

The 15-year-old girl was transported to the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance with non-life threatening injuries.

Officers found the male youth and he was arrested. He was charged with assault, assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon. He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.

The BB gun was seized as evidence.
