A 54-year-old Chatham man has been charged with theft related to a stolen piece of equipment that was used during Canada Day celebrations.

A John Deere Gator valued at approximately $16,000 was on loan from McGrail Farm Equipment to the Canada Day 150 Committee and was used in Tecumseh Park on July 2.

Police say sometime between July 2 at 9 p.m. and July 3 at 9 a.m., the Gator was stolen from Tecumseh Park located at 50 William Street N. in Chatham.

On Thursday at 11 a.m., police attended an address on Wellington Street E. in Chatham as the homeowner found the Gator at the rear of her property.

As the homeowner was walking the officer to where she found it, a man not known to her, was sitting on the Gator, attempting to start it.

At 11:30 a.m. the 54-year-old Chatham man was arrested and charged with possession of property obtained by a crime over $5000.

He was transported to Chatham-Kent Police Service Headquarters where he has been held for a bail hearing.
