Windsor firefighters were called out to the South West Ontario Detention Centre for reports of a fire today.

Staff on scene were able to extinguish the fire, but Windsor fire attended the scene after reports of heavy smoke.

The Ministry of Corrections says the fire started in a cell.

Fire services ventilated the building and cleared out the smoke.

Windsor fire officials say an inmate was taken to hospital for minor smoke inhalation.

Damage is estimated at $500.
