A Chatham couple is feeling uneasy after they say their home was broken into and $8,000 in cash and belongings were stolen.

George Loutsos believes he may have seen a person involved in a planned break and enter.

"I'm pretty sure they have been scoping the place for a while now," says Loutsos.

Chatham-Kent police say cash, jewelry and electronics were taken Thursday night. Police say unknown suspects forced their way into the residence on Delaware Avenue, causing about $200 damage.

Loutsos and his girlfriend, Jennifer MacDonald, say the suspects were looking for specific items. Electronics and jewelry were swiped, while other easy-to-grab items were left behind.

"I think for us it was an invasion into our new home and an invasion into our lives," says MacDonald.

They believe the thieves busted through the backdoor sometime between 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. They quickly packed up what they wanted and left.

"They used suitcases to transport everything out of the house, dumped clothes out,” says MacDonald. “They were in and out pretty quick, pretty efficient."

The couple say they've been rocked by this event, and were unable to sleep Thursday night.

"I would listen to a little sound and jump up and open my eyes and look around, but I think I got a little bit of sleep first thing in the morning when I could see the daylight," says Loutsos.

The investigation into the break and enter is on-going.
