The post office in Olde Sandwich Towne will be shutting its doors for good on April 26th.

Canada Post has completed its consultation for the building at 3201 Sandwich Street. Two employees will be moved to other locations.

“We’ve informed employees today that we’ll be closing April 26,” says Jon Hamilton, director of communications at Canada Post. “Those two employees have job security so they will be assigned other work.”

Many community members tried to keep the location open, holding rallies and writing letters to Canada Post. Hamilton says the company carefully reviewed the feedback, but decided to proceed with the closure.

“Certainly we listened to the community,” says Hamilton. “We had our consultation process.”

Hamilton says the company made the decision based on declining mail volumes and revenues.

There are nine Canada Post locations within a seven kilometre radius of the Sandwich Street location and stamps can be purchased at three local businesses in the area.

Canada Post plans on selling the Sandwich building.

“For sale signs will likely go up in the next few weeks, but mail will be going there until April 26,” says Hamilton.
