WINDSOR, ONT. -- Buses are cancelled in Windsor and Essex County due to snow for the first time this school year.

Snow started on Monday and continued overnight and into Tuesday morning.

Buskids.ca says all board provided transportation is cancelled for Tuesday.

Elementary schools remain open for in-school students. High school students with both the public and Catholic school boards are expected to participate in classes online.

Transit Windsor buses are not cancelled.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent.

The multi-day snowfall event is expected to continue throughout the day into the overnight.

Additional snowfall amounts of five centimetres are possible Tuesday through Wednesday morning.

The forecaster says the snowfall is a result of a strengthening low pressure system expected to move through eastern Ontario into Quebec.

Precipitation associated with this low pressure system is expected to move east of the area overnight.
