It's a rare occurrence, something that's happened only once in the past 10 years.

The ferries that run to and from Boblo Island are stuck in the icy Detroit River, leaving residents somewhat stranded.

The ice-breaking boats designed to create a clear path for the passenger ferry are themselves stuck in the ice, next to the docks.

"Two days ago, the ferry could get across because there was a pathway, but the wind changed on Saturday and the wind forced the closure of the pathway," says resident Terry Hall who has been keeping a close eye on the situation from Amherstburg.

Roughly 60 to 70 people are currently on the island and Joe Meloche is one of them.

"Well, on the island it's nice and quiet. There's no traffic for sure. Beautiful area to be stuck on i guess you might put it that way," says Meloche by phone.

He says Islanders haven't encountered any issues so far and he isn't concerned.

"I got heat, I got water. Everybody is comfortable on the island. We've been checking with each other for the people who are left here," he says.

Amico, the Boblo Island Transportation company says severe weather caused much thicker ice which lead to the build-up.

But they have a plan for getting people to work on Monday.

"Officials are using 4 fan boats to transport people to and from Boblo Island for things like getting people to work on Monday. When they arrive on shore, rental cars will be waiting at no cost to them," says spokesperson Cindy Prince.

In case of an emergency, the Canadian Coast Guard is also on stand-by.

It's unclear at this time when the ferry service will be restored.
