London Police have laid charges in the case of the deceased baby found in a dumpster earlier this week.

On Thursday June 16th, 2016 around 11:35 a.m., London Police received information that a deceased baby was located in a garbage dumpster in the area of Richmond Street and Mill Street. The final autopsy results, which include trying to ascertain the cause of death, are pending further medical testing that will take weeks or months.

Investigators have identified the mother of the deceased baby, whom they believe is also responsible for placing it in the dumpster on June 16th. She was located in Amherstburg and then arrested early this morning with the assistance of the Amherstburg Police Service.

Police say the first priority was the welfare of the mother and she was taken for medical attention. She was then transported back to London by Major Crime Detectives. At this point in the investigation, a 23-year-old woman has been charged with neglecting to obtain assistance in child birth, and disposing of a body of a child after delivery. Both of these charges are offences under the Criminal Code.

London Police Major Crime Section is continuing with this investigation. Police are not seeking any other persons responsible at this time, but they are encouraging anyone with information relating to this incident to call the London Police Service at (519) 661-5670 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222 TIPS (8477).
