The Town of Amherstburg is looking to update its nuclear protocols in order to better align with industry standards.

Officials say there are some gaps in the official emergency management program, one of which is the size of the primary zone.

The current zone is 23 kilometres from Fermi, but stateside where the reactor is located, the zone is 16 kilometres. Amherstburg is looking for clarification on the standard.

The Town is also looking to get more financial compensation from Detroit Edison, the owners of Fermi. It currently collects $25,000 each year to pay for training, staff, and facilities.

The province will open negotiations with Fermi to compensate the Town more appropriately.
