LONDON ONT -- A 94-year-old man has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder as Chatham-Kent police are Investigating a homicide that took place in a Wallaceburg residence on Boxing Day.

At approximately 3:30 a.m. on Dec. 26 police say they responded to a call on Margaret Avenue in Wallaceburg.

Upon arrival, officers located an 89-year-old woman in the residence with no vital signs. Despite efforts to save her life, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Members of our investigators services branch spent the last few days conducting interviews while our forensic identification unit examined the scene and gathered evidence,” Chatham-Kent Police Service Cst. Renee Cowell told CTV News.

Police have determined that the woman’s death was a homicide, Police say her 94-year-old husband has been arrested and charged with second degree murder.

“He was before the courts this morning has since been remanded again to custody and will be up for court again on Dec. 31,” Cowell said.

The investigation is ongoing. Police can confirm that there is no threat to public safety as this was an isolated incident.

Cowell said in order to protect the integrity of the investigation, police held off on releasing information until they were “comfortable in doing so.”

“I would ask that everyone turn their attention to those affected by this tragic situation and really keep them in your thoughts and prayers this holiday season,” Cowell said.
