A house fire in Amherstburg caused about $150,000 dollars in damage.

Fire crews were called to a home at 77 Gore Street around 6:30 a.m, Saturday, November 19th, where they encountered heavy smoke coming from the main floor.

Officials say the fire started at the rear of a main floor room and caused extensive damage to the second floor of the house and the attic. Crews worked for two hours to extinguish the blaze.

Deputy Fire Chief Lee Tome credits a working smoke alarm with ensuring that the sleeping resident was able to escape safely.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
