It’s happening all over the world including Windsor.

Nikolai Momot is a second year student at the university and a member of the student group "The Windsor Cannabis Movement.”

This year he's decided to organize a marijuana march on October 5th through the downtown streets as a way of starting the local conversation about the legitimization and legalization of pot. "This is a demonstration, it's not like hey, let’s smoke marijuana in front of city hall because it's cool. We want to send a message."

A message to the government that weed shouldn't be treated any different than alcohol or tobacco.

Nikolai says regular people want to see weed legalized, including some high ranking politicians who’ve admitted to smoking-up, like Federal Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau.

Trudeau openly admitted to marijuana use since taking office in 2008.

Momot says it's that groundswell of support that pushed him to start a Facebook group and is getting assistance from the west-end culture shop Endless Heights to promote the event.

Police are aware of the demonstration.

Superintendent John St. Louis says everyone has the right to express themselves and peacefully protest a law which is seen as improper and unjust.

However, he says until a law is changed it will be enforced by Windsor Police. "We don't pick and choose the laws we enforce, we enforce the laws the government has."
