Windsor's Bicycling Committee chair, Christopher Waters wants to see a new separate bike lane on Cabana Road between Walker and Huron Church Roads.

"We're hopeful completing the Windsor loop, by increasing the number of bike lanes, ideally doing it by some physical separation; we'll be encouraging others to be cycling as well," he says.

The committee is hoping for some type of physical barrier like bumper blocks which most drivers see in parking lots.

They can be turned parallel to the curb to separate motorists from cyclists.

Ward 9 Councillor, Hilary Payne, is already on board.

"What we have at the moment in Windsor is just white lines painted on the pavement and in my view that does not provide the necessary safety."

The creation of a separate lane comes just one month after the Liberal government passed new distracted driving legislation, making it mandatory for drivers to be at least one metre away from cyclists.

Waters says he`s had some close calls with drivers. "I’ve been driven by so many times with less than a metre, I think if we can get one metre. I think that would be a good thing."

The idea is expected to go before city council next month.
