Plans to renovate and consolidate a number of branches within the Windsor Public Library system were shelved Monday night.

The city pre-committed $7.3-million for the changes, but council sent the plans back to the drawing board, looking to stave off the closure of small branches.

“Libraries are an important resource for the city, and important civic asset and well worth supporting properly," says library board chair Peter Fries.

Plans included the expansion of Budimir Library, renovations at the former Sandwich Fire Hall and the consolidation of South Walkerville, Seminole and Remington Park branches into the Optimist Library.

Councillor Jo-Anne Gignac says concern was expressed about the downtown location.  Several councillors identified they had hoped that would be the initial project that would be undertaken.

“The recommendations that were brought forward were based on solid data and it is a bit frustrating, I'll admit that," says Gignac.
