A Windsor man considered to be a "high-risk traveller" has been arrested, an RCMP spokesperson told CTV News.

Police say Mohammed El Shaer, 26, was arrested at Pearson International Airport in Toronto on Wednesday upon his return to Canada.

A member of Windsor's Islamic community told CTV News in August that authorities were investigating two local men, El Shaer and Ahmad Waseem, for alleged involvement in the war in Syria.

The RCMP confirmed to CTV News that both men were charged with passport-related offences in the past, but would not confirm the role these men have in the conflict in Syria - if any.

El Shaer was scheduled to appear in a Windsor courtroom on Wednesday to face a passport fraud charge.
