It was a day to remember in Windsor as dozens gathered to commemorate the raid on Dieppe, France.

Members of the Essex and Kent Scottish Regiment, along with community members, gathered in Dieppe Park in downtown Windsor on Tuesday afternoon, to pay honour to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

“72 years ago, that's when the Dieppe raid happened and at this time, at one o'clock, as far as the regiment is concerned the raid was over," says Hardy Wheeler.

There are just two surviving members of the Essex and Kent Scottish Regiment who were part of the battle. On Aug. 19, 1942, roughly 500 local soldiers fought on the beaches of German-occupied Dieppe.

"So it significantly impacted the regiment and the community because all those 500 people had friends, relatives, and acquaintances here in Windsor."

Following the ceremony, a procession of pipes and drums marched along the Detroit River.
