Windsor is preparing to welcome 200 to1,000 Syrian refugees, say city officials.

“We fully expect that we will have a number of refugees that are sent to the City of Windsor and we are just kind of waiting for more details,” said Mayor Drew Dilkens after speaking with the federal Minister of Citizenship and Immigration.

The mayor said the city is hoping to get more information on timelines, funding and exact numbers soon.

“That clearly affects our ability to be able to process that many people.”

The City of Windsor will need to help find the refugees housing and support networks, but Dilkens is confident the infrastructure is in place.

“We also have great community supports and settlement agencies in the city who are very accustomed to dealing with diversity and immigration.”

The federal government has committed to bringing in 25,000 Syrian refuges by the end of the year.

Dilkens said there will be a meeting in Ottawa in the next few weeks to help host cities get more detailed information.

“We’re prepared in the City of Windsor to do our share to support these refugees in this time of crisis.”
